Hall and boot room
A Boot Room Built Into the Hall
At Chesham House the boot room is not a separate room but a single piece of furniture in the hall. It brings together a bench, with an oak seat over a pair of drawers, a row of coat hooks on tongue and groove panelling, a pair of cupboards over the bench and tall cupboards beside it, so that coats, shoes and bags each have a place of their own.
The doors are raised and fielded, a traditional style in which each panel has a flat raised centre with bevelled edges, and the same panelling continues onto the end of the unit, so it looks finished from along the hall as well as from the front. A cornice runs along the top and a plinth along the floor, in keeping with a hall that has panelled doors and a ceiling rose.
The unit is painted in a deep teal green, with the tongue and groove behind the hooks in the same colour, and the oak seat adds the warmth of natural timber. Like everything we make, it was designed for its place, handmade at our workshop and fitted in the hall by our own team, with all of the painting and finishing completed before it left the workshop. Sylvan Design makes boot rooms and other fitted furniture at Plummers Plain, near Horsham, for houses in Surrey, Sussex, Kent and London.

Boot Room Bench
The bench has an oak seat over two panelled drawers with small knobs. Above it, a row of coat hooks is fixed to tongue and groove panelling, and a pair of cupboards closes the top of the recess.
-
Tall Cupboards
Beside the bench, a pair of tall doors stands beneath a pair of shorter ones, all raised and fielded and rising to the cornice. Together they give full height storage next to the hooks and drawers.
-
Hall Cupboard
Elsewhere in the hall, a separate tall cupboard stands beside a sash window. It is painted in the same deep teal green and has the same raised and fielded doors, cornice and plinth.

It starts at the consultation, where we look at the space with you, talk about what the bench needs to hold and take initial measurements. At the design stage every part is considered, from the depth of the seat to the number of drawers and hooks, and the drawings are agreed with you. The bench is then handmade to that exact specification at our workshop near Horsham, and our own team fits it.

No. A boot room can be a single unit in a hall, as it is at Chesham House, where a bench, coat hooks, drawers and tall cupboards are built into one painted piece of furniture. In a separate room the same parts can be arranged around the walls. We look at the space with you at the consultation before anything is drawn.

Raised and fielded is a traditional style of panelled door. The centre of each panel is flat and stands slightly proud, and its edges are bevelled down to meet the frame around it. It gives a more formal look than a plain shaker door, and at Chesham House it is used on the doors, the drawer fronts and the end panel of the unit.

Yes. A deep colour can work well in a hall, and we help you choose one that suits the hall and the rooms that open off it while the design is drawn. Chesham House is painted in a deep teal green, with the oak seat as a natural contrast. Every part is painted and finished in our workshop, so the unit arrives ready to fit.
