An Extra Large Island for a Generous Open Plan Room
Our Birds Hill kitchen has an extra large island to complement the generous open plan room. The island seats five, so it serves as a place to sit and talk as well as a place to work.
In a room of this size, an island needs to be large enough to hold its own. Sizing it to the room keeps the proportions balanced and gives the open plan space a natural gathering point.
Storage is shared between two spaces. A bespoke larder and a separate walk in pantry with a glass display cabinet provide plenty of storage, so the kitchen cupboards are not asked to hold everything. In general, a larder keeps everyday food close to where it is prepared, while a walk in pantry gives storage a small room of its own.
Classic Quartz San Vincente worktops work beautifully with the warm pale grey cabinets. A warm grey suits a generous room because it keeps the space light without making it feel cold.
The same care reaches the smallest details. An oak knife drawer is made with dovetail joints, the traditional cabinet making joint in which the corners of the drawer interlock, so the drawer stays strong in daily use.
As with every Sylvan kitchen, each component was considered at the design stage, from the size of the island to the knife drawer. Birds Hill was designed and made by Sylvan Design, a maker of bespoke, handmade kitchens based in Horsham, West Sussex.

The bespoke larder is made to measure for the kitchen and gives everyday food a dedicated place. It works together with the separate walk in pantry.

The walk in pantry is a separate room for storage, away from the main kitchen. Its glass display cabinet means the pantry can display things as well as store them.

The Birds Hill island seats five. It was made extra large to complement the generous open plan room, so it works as a place to sit and talk as well as a large surface for preparing food. Its size was set by the room, which keeps the proportions of the space balanced.

Birds Hill has a bespoke larder and a separate walk in pantry with a glass display cabinet, which together provide plenty of storage. There is also an oak knife drawer made with dovetail joints, a traditional cabinet making detail that keeps the drawer strong and gives knives a place of their own.

The cabinets at Birds Hill are painted in a warm pale grey, and the worktops are Classic Quartz San Vincente. The two work beautifully together. The pale grey keeps the large open plan room bright, and its warmth sits comfortably with the quartz.
